For over a decade, I have been making small ballpoint ink and colored pencil drawings in that collapsed mental state before beginning the 'main' work of the day. Usually, I listen to music and drink coffee during this time. These casually created self-forming drawings depict sentimental and vulnerable interactions such as: gift-giving, singing and kissing between limbless/organ-less couples, threesomes, and small crowds comprised of animal creatures, hermaphrodites and children. Although, in many of the drawings, the figures' complete passivity belie that actual interactions are either imagined or in that space between or beyond physical contact. The aim of these drawings, which I affectionately have named, 'Slips,' is to reveal a basic human desire and anxiety of intimacy and conformity. |
